Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the impact of sleep deprivation on reducing the symptoms among patients with depression in Bandar Abbas. The research method was quasi-experimental with a Pretest-Posttest design and control group. The study population consisted of those patients referred to counselling centres. 40 volunteers were selected as the sample, they were then matched according to age and gender and divided equally (20) in the control and test group. Pre-test was performed for both groups. Afterwards, the test group was subject to sleep deprivation for 24 hours. The two groups were then tested again (Post-test). The data were collected using Beck Depression Inventory, and analysed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The results showed that sleep deprivation reduced depression symptoms in the test group (p < 0.001), and the effect of pre-test was not found statistically significant (p = 0.330). The conclusion is that sleep deprivation can improve depressive outcomes.
